If you’re selling your home, you’ve likely browsed a home décor magazine or watched an episode or two on HGTV. You know you need to make your house look its best and are familiar with the term “staging.” However, you might not be sure where to start or how far you need to go to make your home appeal to interested buyers.
Ty and Traci Chivers of Premier Properties of South Florida provide their tips and recommendations for making your home shine.
Curb appeal matters. If you want people to love the inside of your home, you must first get them in the door. Many buyers will drive by a home before scheduling a showing so be sure the outside of your house is clean and inviting. This may be as simple as keeping your lawn freshly maintained or power washing the windows. Or it may require more effort such as a fresh coat of paint or new landscaping.
Clean and de-clutter. We know it’s not always easy to keep your home sparkling. Especially if you’re living in it with children and pets. But it’s important that counters and floors sparkle, that the cobwebs are removed, and dishes are put away. Also, it’s important to get rid of anything you don’t need. Consider boxing up pots and pans, books, toys, decorations, and out of season clothing. This will allow the potential buyer to focus on your home; not your stuff.
Make it imaginable. I know, we just told you to get rid of your stuff. But, keep things that can make your home more appealing. Think about flowers on a dining room table, nice artwork on your living room walls, fresh oranges and lemons on the kitchen counter. Create a space that a potential buyer can imagine living in.
Neutralize. So you’re trendy and fun and your home reflects that personality with colorful walls and furniture? This could make it challenging for buyers if they simply don’t like your style. Consider painting brightly colored walls with neutral tones and swap out eclectic, overly romantic and trendy décor with more subtle furnishings.
Don’t forget about the backyard. Just like the inside of your home, you want potential buyers to imagine themselves grilling, swimming or entertaining in the backyard. Ensure that the landscaping is maintained and put out some comfortable seating.
